Michael Tongg serves as Head Coach for the Norco College Men’s Cross Country team.

Coach Michael Tongg, alumni of California Baptist University, is from sunny Honolulu Hawaii, and his favorite hobbies include: surfing, bodyboarding, snowboarding, scuba diving, running, biking, and triathlons! When Coach Tongg is not spending his time coaching his Women’s Cross Country team, he can be found spending quality time with his wife and kids. Coach Tongg mentioned that quality time with his family is important because he believes that who you are starts with how you are raised and this can help you become who you want to be. Adventuring and growing old with his wife is something he always cherishes, and being able to spend time with his kids and watching them grow is very special for Coach Tongg to see. In the fall of 2018, Coach Tongg arrived at Norco College, however, prior to his start he coached both high school volleyball and soccer, as well as club volleyball.

Coach Tonng’s philosophy is centered around the word Ohana, meaning family. When everyone a part of the team comes together, they can grow, learn, and continue to develop as a cohesive unit and ultimately makes the team stronger. A team is there for one another through any challenge and obstacle they may be faced with and are there to support each other through thick and thin. Growing up, Michael Tonng played a variety of sports, however, his main sports were Canoe paddling, soccer, and volleyball and if not playing a sport he would have been found at the beach surfing! During his time at CBU, he played soccer all four years, was a part of the track team for one year, and played for the men’s travel volleyball club team for two years. What drew Coach Tongg to coaching stemmed from the coaches he had growing up. There were many coaches that had impactful moments throughout Coach Tonggs time of playing sports, but his most impactful and important coach he had that he strives to be, was his father. His father was firm but loving, strict yet forgiving, and when it came to commitment you were either committed or not, there were no in betweens and maybes. Coach Tongg’s favorite sporting achievement was completing a full IronMan 140.6 race in Tempe, Arizona.
